Florence Mecham, wife of late governor, dies

Funeral services for Florence Mecham, wife of the late Arizona Gov. Evan Mecham, will be held Sept. 15, in the Gilbert LDS meeting house, 4629 E. Guadalupe Road. Mrs. Mecham died Sept. 4 of natural causes at the age of 87.

Evan Mecham, a Republican, served 15 months as governor before an impeachment trial removed him from office in 1988. He died in 2008. Mrs. Mecham is survived by a brother, seven children, 29 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Interment will be in the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona at 9 a.m. on Sept. 17.

By all accounts, Martin Gold was a humble and hard-working man. He was popular among the immigrant community, especially the Mexicans—who called him Don Martin—because of his facility with languages.
