Gov. Jan Brewer signed a bill to give the Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission an additional $500,000 to continue its ongoing legal battles.
Brewer on Wednesday signed HB 2503. The IRC asked the Legislature for $2.27 million for the remainder of the 2013 fiscal year, but lawmakers pared down the request to a half million.
The commission is facing three separate lawsuits in state and federal court. One of those suits, which challenges the constitutionality of the IRC’s legislative lines, goes to trial on March 25.
Republican lawmakers, many of whom believe the IRC strongly favored Democrats in the redistricting process, have largely been hostile to the commission. But the Arizona Constitution requires the Legislature to provide funding to the IRC.
