Brewer marks state’s 101st birthday

Gov. Jan Brewer is marking Arizona’s 101st birthday with two events Thursday at the Capitol.

The governor plans Thursday morning to unveil a privately commissioned bronze statue of Arizona miner George Warren, whose image appears on the state’s official seal.

Brewer Thursday evening will turn on permanent lighting for the Capitol’s copper dome and the Winged Victory figure atop the dome.

The governor’s office says there’ll be a brief fireworks display after the lighting.

Trent Franks announces he is resigning immediately after wife is admitted to hospital

Franks said in a written statement his wife became ill Friday and he decided the best thing for his family would be for his resignation to become effective immediately.
