Trial begins in GOP redistricting map challenge

Last-minute filings in a federal lawsuit brought by Republicans who claim new legislative maps were illegally drawn to benefit Democrats show GOP lawyers claim to have new evidence to back up their case.

Sunday’s filing from the Republicans’ lawyers say they received evidence last week that a member of the state’s redistricting commission received maps of proposed new districts from the state Democratic Party’s executive director. The lawyers want to call an unscheduled witness during the trial that begins Monday to show those maps included information on incumbents.

The civil case filed by 11 Republican voters claim the commission varied legislative districts’ populations in an effort to get more Democrats elected.

Lawyers for the Independent Redistricting Commission say it was trying to meet Voting Rights Act and constitutional requirements.
