Brewer OKs extra redistricting commission funds

Gov. Jan Brewer has signed a bill providing yet another supplemental appropriation for the commission that drew up new legislative and congressional districts following the 2010 Census.

The law signed Monday provides $635,000 to the Independent Redistricting Commission. The IRC is the target of several lawsuits challenging the district maps. A weeklong trial on the state Legislative maps was held in federal court last month. A three-judge panel could issue a decision at any time.

The commission wanted between $635,000 and $720,000 to pay legal bills through June 30. House Speaker Andy Tobin and Senate President Andy Biggs agreed on the lower amount.

A Democratic effort to amend Senate Bill 1482 to add the additional $85,000 failed last week. A $500,000 appropriation was approved in January.

  1. I’m curious why no one writes about whose money it is that is fueling all the litigation against the IRC.
