Jury to be selected for trial of ex-congressman Renzi

TUCSON — Jury selection is scheduled to start Tuesday in federal court in Tucson in the trial of former Congressman Rick Renzi and a former business partner of the Arizona Republican.

Renzi faces charges accusing him of trying to engineer a land swap to benefit himself and a business partner and of siphoning off money from his family insurance agency for his personal and political benefit.

Former business partner James Sandlin is accused in the land swap part of the case.

The trial could last more than two months.

Renzi represented Arizona’s sprawling 1st Congressional District before declining to seek re-election in 2008.
