Arizonans on both sides of the political spectrum are praising the U.S. Supreme Court’s rulings on gay marriage.

Cathi Herrod, president of the conservative Center for Arizona Policy, says Arizona’s state ban on gay marriage was upheld by the Supreme Court’s rulings Wednesday. She praised the court for recognizing the will of Arizona voters who have defined marriage as between a man and a woman.

Meanwhile, gay marriage proponents have launched a referendum to change the state constitution and allow gay marriage in Arizona.

The Supreme Court rulings Wednesday struck down a provision of a federal law denying federal benefits to married gay couples. It also cleared the way for same-sex marriage in California. But the court said nothing about gay marriage bans in other states.

  1. It is rank nonsense to say that the Supreme Court’s decisions in the DOMA case and Prop 8 case from California “upheld” any other state’s laws with respect to same-sex marriage. No other state’s law was before the Court, and nothing was decided about the merits of Arizona’s laws with respect to the subject.
