A lawmaker exploring a possible run for Arizona Secretary of State has dropped the effort and thrown his support to fellow Republican Wil Cardon.

Rep. Steve Montenegro of Litchfield Park announced Thursday he was dropping his campaign for the 2014 Republican nomination.

Montenegro is a former aide to U.S. Rep. Trent Franks serving his third term in the Arizona House of Representatives.

Cardon is a wealthy investor who ran for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination last year and was defeated by eventual winner and now-Sen. Jeff Flake. Montenegro says that statewide campaign experience will help Cardon and he will support the effort.

Other Republicans considering runs include Sen. Michele Reagan and Rep. Justin Pierce.

Current Secretary of State Ken Bennett is barred by term limits from running for re-election.
