Ex-US Rep. Rick Renzi appeals corruption verdict

Rick RenziFormer U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi is appealing his conviction on public corruption, money laundering and other charges.

The former congressman from Arizona notified a federal judge in Tucson on Friday that he would appeal the conviction and the three-year prison sentence he received last month.

Renzi co-defendant James Sandlin got 18 months in prison and he too is appealing.

They are to begin their prison terms in January.

Renzi was convicted in June on 17 of 32 counts, including wire fraud, conspiracy, extortion, racketeering, money laundering and making false statements to insurance regulators. The 55-year-old left office in 2008 while facing the indictment.

Renzi now lives in Burke, Va. Sandlin resides in Sherman, Texas.
