A state official says five senior staffers in the state’s troubled child welfare agency have been placed on leave.

Juvenile Corrections Director Charles Flannery says Department of Economic Security Director Clarence Carter decided to place the five Child Protective Services staffers on leave. They haven’t been publicly identified.

The Arizona Republic reports that personnel moves are the first since Carter announced nearly two weeks ago that more than 6,000 child abuse and neglect reports received by CPS were closed without investigations.

Gov. Jan Brewer on Monday announced that Flannery will head a board she has creaed to review the investigations of child welfare cases and to identify areas needing improvement.
