US attorney’s office in AZ collects $7.7M in 2013

gavel-moneyThe U.S. attorney’s office for the District of Arizona has claimed more than $7.7 million from civil and criminal actions in fiscal year 2013.

U.S. Attorney John S. Leonardo announced the amount in a news release Thursday.

Leonardo says about $4.8 million came from criminal cases and $2.9 million from civil actions.

His office also raked in an additional $519 million from cases pursued jointly with other U.S. Attorney’s Offices as well as the U.S. Department of Justice.

According to Leonardo, the largest civil collections stemmed from cases where federal officials recovered money lost to fraud or misconduct, as well as fines for violations of federal health, safety, civil rights or environmental laws.

The District of Arizona also collected $13.3 million in asset forfeiture actions.

  1. Is the title accurate? Shouldn’t the total should be $540, 000,000.00? Asset forfeiture needs major reform.
