The Arizona House overwhelmingly approved a bill criminalizing “revenge porn.”

Rep. J.D. Mesnard’s bill would criminalize the act of sharing or publishing lewd images of a person without his or her consent, making an increasingly common act of revenge a felony in Arizona, he said.

“It’s unfortunate that we have to bring a bill like this forward,” said Mesnard, R-Chandler. “As technology changes, people invent new ways of hurting folks.”

The House approved the bill on a voice vote in the committee of the whole.

It still requires a final vote before it can be sent to the Senate.

Mesnard amended the bill to clarify that the first person who “intentionally” shares a lewd image without consent would be found liable, but not the second, third or fourth person down the line who unknowingly shares an image portraying someone without their approval.
