PHOENIX (AP) — The American Legion is opening a “crisis command center” in Phoenix to help veterans caught up in the waiting list scandal at Veteran Affairs medical centers.

The Legion says it is sending a team of experts to Phoenix to set up the center set to open next week.

The director of the Legion’s Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation Division in Washington says the crisis center will have a triage team to identify veterans’ problems and direct them to stations where they’ll get help. Verna Jones says on-site stations include benefits claims, enrollment in VA health care and bereavement counseling.

The center is to be set up at the American Legion’s Post 1 on Seventh Avenue and open at noon on Tuesday.
