Outgoing Arizona House Speaker David Gowan has created a political committee to seek a state Senate seat in 2018.

Thursday’s political committee filing with the Arizona Secretary of State’s office allows Gowan to raise money for a campaign.

Gowan was term-limited this year and instead campaigned in the Republican primary for the 1st Congressional District. He suspended his campaign weeks before the August primary after it became clear he was far behind in the polls. The GOP primary was won by Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu, who lost the general election to Democrat Tom O’Halleran.

Gowan didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment. He is from Sierra Vista and filed to seek election representing the 14th Legislative District seat now held by Sen. Gail Griffin. Griffin is term-limited in 2018.
