State Supreme Court justice fights effort to remove him (access required)

The only state Supreme Court justice on the retention ballot is striking back at Republicans calling for his removal because of a ruling on a ballot measure to change the state’s election system.

Republican committees in Legislative Districts 12 and 18 circulated flyers calling for a no vote for Justice John Pelander, a Republican who was Gov. Jan Brewer’s first selection to the Supreme Court in 2009.

Rep. Miranda, family, invoke Fifth Amendment during election-challenge suit <span class="dmcss_key_icon"><img alt="(access required)" src="/files/2013/12/lock1.png" border=0/></span>

Rep. Catherine Miranda, her husband and step-daughter invoked their Fifth Amendment rights on the witness stand today in a court hearing to determine whether the Phoenix Democrat should be removed from office for submitting allegedly forged signatures on election forms. Miranda’s attorney, Tom Ryan, said he can’t allow his client or her family to testify while she is under criminal investigation.
