New website helps patients compare hospital costs, procedures (access required)


New data has just been uploaded onto a state-run website to help would-be patients compare, on a hospital-by-hospital basis, outcomes on all sorts of medical issues, like how often a surgery patient bleeds after a procedure to the chances of dying in the hospital after heart failure. There even are results of more subjective surveys of patients of how well doctors and nurses communicated with them.

Biosensors and the need for early disease detection (access required)


The American Cancer Society predicts that in 2014, more than 1.6 million new cases of cancer will arise in the United States and more than half a million people will die from the disease, with 11,400 of those deaths occurring in Arizona. The treatment challenge remains in detecting the disease early enough to have a chance in successfully combating it.
