Arizona gets $30M from feds for state-based exchange

Arizona today received $30 million in grant money from the Obama administration to help the state establish a health insurance exchange.

This is on top of the $1 million in planning grant the state earlier got.

The exchange, which is aimed at making it easier for individuals and small businesses to purchase health insurance, is a key component of the federal health care overhaul.

Business interests, Brewer push for implementation of health care exchange (access required)

Arizona’s policymakers clashed with members of the business community and insurance industry Nov. 2 over whether to implement a key component of the federal health care overhaul. Under the federal law, states have the option to run their own health insurance exchange, which will ultimately be a web portal where individuals and businesses can buy insurance. If states choose not to implement the exchanges, the federal government will do it for them.

Parts of Arizona Medicaid plan rejected (access required)

Arizona can’t deny health coverage to about 60,000 low-income parents, federal health officials said today.

The state had asked the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to allow the elimination of health coverage of parents whose family income balls between 75 and 100 percent of the poverty level.
