Judge upholds major portions of Alabama’s SB1070-style law (access required)

A federal judge in Alabama upheld two major provisions of that state’s illegal immigration law that are nearly identical to key portions of SB1070 that were struck down. U.S. District Court Judge Sharon Blackburn blocked some portions of HB56 in her ruling on Wednesday but upheld provisions making it a crime to not carry immigration papers and requiring law enforcement officers to check people’s immigration status if they have a reasonable suspicion that they’re in the country illegally.

Mum on Immigration

In the extraordinary battle to keep his legislative seat, Arizona’s most hawkish proponent of strict enforcement of illegal immigration laws is, incredibly, mostly muted on the subject.

Since a recall election against him was certified last month, Senate President Russell Pearce has passed on the opportunity to weigh in on major developments in the immigration front.

And for a man who is often quick to label his enemies as part of the “open border” and “cheap labor” crowd, Pearce has yet to tar his most serious challenger, Mesa Republican Jerry Lewis.
