Giffords shows great progress, but still struggles

Smiling and cheerful, fussing with her interviewer's hair and nestled in the arms of her husband, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords displayed remarkable progress from the shocking images of her the day after she was shot in the forehead outside a Tucson supermarket.

But she still struggled to form complete sentences and said, with her husband's help, that she wouldn't return to Congress until she was "better."

Book gives look at Giffords recovery

When President George H.W. Bush came to visit her in the hospital, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords could say only "Wow!" and another word she had been uttering frequently at the time, "chicken."

Months later, when she was shown photos of famous people to see if she recognized faces, Giffords looked at Arnold Schwarzenegger and replied, more or less accurately: "Messin' around. Babies."

After a day of outrage from Arizona Democrats over a Pima County Republican Party raffle for a Glock handgun – the brand used in the assassination attempt of Tucson Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords – House Minority Leader Chad Campbell said he will ask every member of the Legislature and Gov. Jan Brewer to sign a letter asking the party to cancel the fundraiser.
