Brewer State of State: A focus on history, but emphasizes conservative agenda (access required)

Gov. Jan Brewer’s State of the State address was light on details and big on broad outlines as she focused more on Arizona’s centennial celebration and the accomplishments of her administration, but she made it clear that 2012 will be a year of furthering a conservative agenda across a broad spectrum of state government.

Brewer vowed an expansion of school choice, the continued cutting of taxes and regulations, an overhaul of the state’s personnel system and continued defiance of federal policies on border security, health care and land management.

Giffords, survivors to commemorate mass shooting

TUCSON - U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, other survivors of the Tucson shooting rampage and numerous others will come together in the close-knit southern Arizona city on Jan. 8 to commemorate the one-year mark of that tragic day and remember those who died. A number of events are planned that Sunday, although it remained unclear Thursday which Giffords will attend or whether she will make any public statements.

Giffords shows great progress, but still struggles

Smiling and cheerful, fussing with her interviewer's hair and nestled in the arms of her husband, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords displayed remarkable progress from the shocking images of her the day after she was shot in the forehead outside a Tucson supermarket.

But she still struggled to form complete sentences and said, with her husband's help, that she wouldn't return to Congress until she was "better."
