Disdain for tax system reason enough to cheer on reformers

When it comes to modernizing and simplifying our nation’s archaic tax codes and reducing tax burdens on citizens’ businesses, it seems that “perfect” may be getting in the way of “very good.” This is a common theme in Washington and one of the reasons why most of us see Congress as never getting anything done. But cutting taxes and simplifying the code also seems like a no-brainer to those of us who walk Main Street in cities and towns across our country. This plan will reduce taxes on employers — and that helps everyone.

Brewer eyes a raft of changes to tax code (access required)

Gov. Jan Brewer is looking to build on last year’s tax cuts with a handful of changes aimed at fixing “problem areas” in the state’s tax code.

Michael Hunter, Brewer’s lobbyist, outlined the changes the governor wants to make at an Arizona Commerce Authority Board meeting on Wednesday.

Jobs bill survives late Senate debate (access required)

Despite strong objections from Democrats and some Republicans, the Senate leadership Tuesday evening pushed ahead to debate the jobs bill, a maneuver that moves the business-tax-cutting legislation closer to passage.

Having cleared the debate, the bill now goes to the full Senate for a formal “aye” or “nay” vote, which is expected on Wednesday, Feb. 16.

Whether the measure has sufficient support to pass — it needs only 16 votes — is uncertain.
