Proceed with caution when chasing empty promises

In the aftermath of the Glendale City Council’s March 18th workshop, touted by the Tohono O’Odham Nation as a victory for their proposed neighborhood casino, media headlines spoke of the beginning of “negotiations” between the Nation and the city. As a veteran of this five-year-long political and legal battle and the governor of the Gila River Indian Community, I write to offer a strong note of caution about such “negotiations.”

Filing says Arizona tribe secretly planned casino

The proposed casino the Tohono O'odham Nation wants to build near Glendale.

The state and two tribes say there's documentation that the Tohono O'odham Nation was secretly planning about a decade ago to acquire land for a Phoenix-area casino at a time when the Tohono O'odhams were among tribes promising to limit the number of casinos in the metropolitan area.
