TUSD disbands Mexican American Studies program (access required)

The state will no longer be mired in litigation over Tucson Unified School District’s Mexican American Studies program. TUSD’s governing board and a federal judge made sure of that Jan. 10 when they respectively disbanded the program and dismissed 11 teachers as plaintiffs in a constitutional challenge to the 2010 law that restricts the teaching of ethnic studies in the state, which was passed as HB2281.

Hearing to test ruling against Mexican-American Studies (access required)

Attorneys for Superintendent of Public Instruction John Huppenthal aren’t planning on calling him as a witness in an administrative hearing to defend his findings that Tucson Unified School District’s Mexican American Studies program is race-based and promotes resentment toward a class of people. But that doesn’t mean he isn’t going to be questioned.
