A day after being repeatedly told by a judge to avoid long-winded answers and focus his responses to address only the question asked, Rep. Doug Quelland frustrated the court by feigning ignorance when asked basic questions. Of course, that was only when he was being cross-examined by the attorney for the Citizens Clean Elections Commission.

Judge needs more time in Quelland case (access required)

The appeal of an order to remove Rep. Doug Quelland from office has moved more slowly than anticipated, and an administrative law judge has scheduled additional hearings in late September. Judge Robert Shedden originally set aside two days to hear Quelland's appeal of a May decision by the Citizens Clean Elections Commission that called for fining the lawmaker $45,000 and removing him from office.

Critic of Clean Elections benefitted from program (access required)

In his Arizona Capitol Times commentary (“Why Clean Elections needs to end now,” June 5), Rep. Rick Murphy calls for the end of Clean Elections in Arizona. Rep. Murphy calls Clean Elections “un-American” and notes that he has been opposed to Clean Elections since it was first proposed. His major complaint is that his participating opponents receive matching funds when he outspends them.
