Deluge of political maneuvering sure to follow Kyl’s leaving

The retirement of U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl will likely set off a chain reaction, as Republicans and Democrats position themselves to run for the open seat.

Burke to head up immigration subcommittee

U.S. Attorney Dennis Burke will chair a subcommittee on border and immigration law enforcement that will advise U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder. Burke, who was recently confirmed as the U.S. attorney for Arizona, on Oct. 26 was named as the chairman of the Border and Immigration Law Enforcement Subcommittee.

Senate committee approves Burke for US attorney post

The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee has approved Dennis Burke as the next U.S. attorney for Arizona. Burke, who served as chief of staff for former Gov. Janet Napolitano, was one of four U.S. attorney nominees to be approved by the committee on Sept. 10, according to media reports. His nomination still must be approved by the full Senate before he takes his post.

Border to top Burke’s agenda as U.S. attorney

Dennis Burke hasn't officially taken his post as Arizona's next U.S. attorney, but he's already familiar with an area that may be his top priority as a federal prosecutor - the border. Just days after being nominated by President Barack Obama as U.S. attorney for Arizona, Burke was on the border at Nogales, part of three days of meetings with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's border czar. Obama and U.S. Attorney Eric Holder have made drug trafficking and human smuggling a top priority, and Burke said he plans to put those issues at the top of his agenda as well.

The state’s Democratic congressional delegation has given its unanimous support to Dennis Burke. Once the background checks conducted by the Justice Department are completed, Burke is expected to be an easy nomination for President Barack Obama, say political insiders.
