Lawmakers try again to pass bills aimed at violence and mental illness <span class="dmcss_key_icon"><img alt="(access required)" src="/files/2013/12/lock1.png" border=0/></span>

Two bills aimed at getting dangerous mentally ill people off the street have passed their respective chambers. One addresses violent offenders being released because they cannot be restored to competency. The other allows a police officer to take a person who is a danger to himself or others into custody for a mental evaluation based on the observations of witnesses or the officer’s own observations.

Giffords doesn’t rule out running for office again

TUCSON — Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords — still recovering from a shooting three years ago — said Thursday she might consider a return to political office.

The Arizona Democrat kept the door open when asked about such a possibility, saying "well, a little later" and "maybe" during an interview on NBC's "Today" show.
