Legal, but unethical – most charter schools use public funds for questionable transactions

A majority of Arizona’s charter schools spend taxpayer dollars on non-competitive business arrangements with for-profit businesses that are owned by the charter holder, board members, or their relatives. Grand Canyon Institute’s research found that 77 percent of charter schools engage in ‘related-party transactions’ in a manner that is not in the best interests of Arizona’s students, parents and taxpayers.

Arizona prisons illegally read inmate mail, 9th Circuit rules

In a unanimous decision Thursday, judges of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals said corrections officials do have the right to "inspect'' outgoing mail, even to attorneys, to ensure that it does not contain contraband. That would include things like a map of the prison yard, timing of shift changes for guards or even actual forbidden items. Conversely, they said it is settled law that prison staffers may not read incoming or outgoing legal mail.

State treasurer says school finance deal is irresponsible, likely illegal

State Treasurer Jeff DeWit said Tuesday a plan to settle the school funding lawsuit with trust land proceeds is irresponsible. And he said it's also likely illegal. DeWit said the additional withdrawals for the next decade called for in the proposal now being pushed by Gov. Doug Ducey would mean huge losses in revenues available to schools beyond that.
