New trial ordered over Arpaio’s pink-underwear policy for inmates

WASHINGTON – A federal court has reinstated a lawsuit against Maricopa County and Sheriff Joe Arpaio by a woman who said her brother’s death stemmed from a traumatic jail “dress out” – when he was held down, stripped and forced into the pink underwear of county inmates. A divided panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals also said a lower court could consider whether Arpaio’s pink-underwear policy for inmates amounts to “punishment without legal justification.”

Leaders offer recommendations on Arpaio’s office

Latino and black leaders in metro Phoenix released a long list of recommendations Friday for overhauling Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office and asked the U.S. Department of Justice to consider the proposals during negotiations to settle civil rights allegations against Arpaio's office.

Stapley announces CD9 run (access required)

After 18 years at the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, Don Stapley is setting his sights on Congress. Stapley said he filed paperwork Tuesday with the Federal Election Commission to run in the 9th Congressional District, which covers parts of Chandler, Mesa, Phoenix and Tempe.
