Suspect detainment criteria outlined in handbook (access required)

It took about two weeks, but Sheriff Joe has figured out where he got the list of criteria to detain illegal immigrants. The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office released a statement earlier this week that noted he will continue to use a set of indicators - including an inability to speak English, unusual appearance and the location where people are stopped - to detain people who might be illegal immigrants.

Feds mum on Arpaio’s upcoming crime sweep (access required)

In response to the loss of his agreement with the federal government that authorized his agency to enforce immigration law on the streets, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio pushed up the date of his next crime suppression sweep to Oct. 16 and said he would deliver any illegal immigrants found by his deputies to the Border Patrol. Federal officials aren't saying how they will react if he makes good on his vow.

Report: Crime funds pay for MCSO cars

Money earmarked for fighting crime in Maricopa County is being used by the sheriff's office to pay for vehicles for department officials, according to records obtained by The Arizona Republic. The records show the sheriff's office is using money seized under the state and federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, or RICO, to pay for the vehicles.
