Stripped of matching funds, Clean Elections loses appeal to candidates (access required)

With the linchpin of Clean Elections gone, participation in Arizona’s once-vigorous campaign financing system has nosedived to levels not seen since the program’s infancy.

Only 72 candidates have signed up for public financing this election cycle, compared to 121 in 2010.

The reason: Clean Elections suffered a devastating blow in the middle of the 2010 campaign season, when the U.S. Supreme Court blocked the state from distributing matching funds.

Pierce says contraception bill probably not coming back (access required)

Senate President Steve Pierce doesn’t think legislation allowing employers with religious objection to deny contraception coverage to workers will return for a second vote. Pierce previously indicated he was willing to cast the required 16th “yes” vote to pass the bill last week if supporters could get 15 senators to support the bill.

Mortgage bill striker draws ire for Reagan and McLain (access required)

A pair of Republican lawmakers was on the defense yesterday after bloggers began weaving a tale of conspiracy, alleging a piece of real estate legislation was killed in exchange for a lawsuit against one of the lawmakers being settled.

But according to the two lawmakers, the issue is an overblown case of coincidence and ignorance about the mechanics of how bills move through the Legislature.
