Lawsuit filed against Cortes; claims she’s a ‘fraudulent” candidate (access required)

An East Valley resident today accused Republican Olivia Cortes of being part of a “cynical ploy” to dilute the vote against Senate President Russell Pearce, who is facing a Nov. 8 recall election. In her complaint filed in Maricopa County Superior Court, Mary Lou Boettcher alleges that Cortes is a Pearce supporter and called her a “fraudulent and diversionary candidate.”

In early interview, Cortes planned to court Hispanic voters (access required)

Critics of Senate President Russell Pearce have labeled Olivia Cortes a "stealth" candidate who is aiming to divide his opposition. This month, media reports quoted a circulator Cortes supposedly hired as admitting that she is running to dilute the vote against Pearce, the state's foremost immigration hawk.

And even though she has denied that the Pearce camp had asked her to run, an early interview with the candidate reveals she planned to court Hispanic voters in the upcoming Mesa recall election.

Mesa: Another Pearce challenger ordered to remove signs (access required)

Olivia Cortes, one of the challengers in the recall election targeting Senate President Russell Pearce, has been told by Mesa officials to take down her campaign signs.

The city sent Cortes a letter last week telling the candidate she had until 5 p.m. Monday to remove her campaign signs. The city will begin taking them down today if they're still standing.

Many Pearce opponents believe that Olivia Cortes, the other Mormon Republican who has entered the LD18 recall race, is little more than a plant from the Pearce camp whose sole purpose in the contest will be to draw anti-Pearce votes away from Jerry Lewis.
