The Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission today approved a congressional draft map that includes a competitive district in the middle of the Phoenix area, voting 3-1 over objections from the two Republican members. Independent Chairwoman Colleen Mathis and Democratic Commissioners Jose Herrera and Linda McNulty voted for the map, while Republican Commissioner Richard Stertz voted against it.Read More »
Arizona’s five redistricting commissioners will begin filling the hole in the center of their “donut” congressional district plan today.
And although the decision to use the "donut" map shows more momentum than the commission has demonstrated in recent weeks, the plan has won opposition.
Arizona’s Independent Redistricting Commission has shifted gears, now collecting public input from elected officials and everyday residents about what they want to see when the state’s political maps get wiped clean and recast.
While the commissioners have heard a variety of suggestions, one recommendation has so far come across more coherently than any other: The perceived need for a squarely conservative congressional district extending along the Colorado River from Mexico to Utah.
