Senate OKs overhaul of state personnel system (access required)

The GOP-controlled Senate today approved Gov. Jan Brewer’s proposal to overhaul the rules that govern state workers. The measure seeks to remove workers from the state’s merit system, giving supervisors more flexibility in firing them. The measure split the Senate along party lines.

After Pearce, Gallardo also invited to testify on SB1070 in Congress

Sen. Steve Gallardo, a Phoenix Democrat and a fierce critic of SB1070, has been invited to testify during a Congressional subcommittee hearing about state-level enforcement of immigration laws. SB1070 architect Russell Pearce, whom Gallardo often clashed with when Pearce served in the Legislature, is also scheduled to testify at the hearing.

Lawmakers spar over sweeping anti-abortion bill

Republicans and Democrats in the Senate sparred Thursday over sweeping anti-abortion legislation that generally bans abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy and institutes new disclosure requirements, including one that requires women to look at a state-run website with images of fetuses at two-week intervals.

Volunteer strike force on border gets Senate OK (access required)

A senator who believes Middle-Eastern terrorist groups are active in Mexico and Central America persuaded her colleagues to advance a proposal that would create an armed volunteer force to help apprehend criminals who illegally enter the United States.

The Senate passed the measure today by a vote of 20-10.
