The Arizona Society of CPAs (ASCPA) is the professional association for Certified Public Accountants in Arizona. The ASCPA serves as a nonpartisan expert resource for all Arizona legislators and policymakers on matters of accounting, finance, tax and business. Representing nearly 5,000 Arizona CPAs, the ASCPA is the profession’s voice at the Legislature.

The ASCPA advocacy team – consisting of in-house government relations, contract lobbyists and expert, volunteer CPAs – reviews every piece of legislation introduced each session for impact on the CPA profession. The ASCPA’s Tax Legislation Review Committee analyzes all tax and finance related legislation to provide nonpartisan feedback on the mechanics of proposed measures to ensure there are no unintended consequences and that it achieves the intended objective.

Bio & Experience:

John Baumer is the director of government relations, where he develops strategies and initiatives for lobbying and advocacy on behalf of the ASCPA and CPA profession. Leading the ASCPA’s advocacy efforts, John serves as the liaison with state legislators, regulators, lobbyists and stakeholders. John began his career in the Arizona State Senate and later moved into the private sector where he lobbied on behalf of an array of clients, including the ASCPA.

In 2019, John was hired by the ASCPA to create the government relations department within the organization and oversee its legislative, regulatory and public affairs efforts. As chief policy advisor to the President & CEO, John provides analysis and strategic support to the ASCPA’s leadership on matters impacting the CPA profession. John supports the ASCPA membership by creating opportunities for CPAs to engage in the legislative, regulatory and political processes.
