Issues:
Political influence: Time-honored Arizona Senator Stan Turley made a great impression on me. He helped me understand and define my priorities. I still use the standards he taught me when weighing the merits of a bill. Among contemporary political figures, I have a tremendous amount of respect for U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl.
Budget recommendations: Voter mandates and maintenance of effort make it difficult to make any significant cuts to the budget. The long-term solution is to increase income by growing and diversifying Arizona’s economy. In order to attract businesses seeking to relocate, Arizona must become more competitive in areas like tax structure and permitting.
Other concerns: There are so many issues facing Arizona, but high on my priority list are commerce and energy issues. Arizona needs a more balanced economy in order to overcome “boom and bust cycles.” There needs to be a more concentrated effort to attract and expand commerce. Energy generation and transmission must be planned for now in order to ensure reliable and affordable electricity, natural gas and petroleum products.
Fiscal philosophy: I believe in fiscal responsibility. Arizonans want more value for tax dollars spent for education, public safety or any other area for that matter. Arizonans want results.
Background & experience: My extensive background in agriculture and business has taught me many things including work ethic, persistence and resiliency. I have worked through many economic cycles by making responsible and sometimes difficult choices. I have also learned that being a good listener is a great asset.
Proposition 100 sales tax: From the beginning, I have stated that I was committed to work with whatever decision the voters made. I felt it was my responsibility to give voters the most accurate information available about the proposition and maintain a neutral position.
Pro-life/pro-choice: I am pro-life.
One last thing: I enjoy the legislative process even though it is sometimes awkward and cumbersome. I get a genuine sense of satisfaction when I can help someone or work on legislation that I believe will lead to a better Arizona.
Campaign Finance: public.
