Religious preference: Unitarian.

Education: B.S., accounting, California State University – Northridge, 1971.

Political experience: Drafted an initiative to bring ethics, transparency and accountability to state government; volunteered for national races and a local city council race; campaigned for Michael Dukakis in 1986.

Memberships have included: AZ Town Hall, Kiwanis, Rotary, Aerospace Industry Association, National Association of Realtors, Certified Information Systems Auditor.

Interests: Improving education, bringing jobs to Arizona, building a sustainable economy in Arizona, and ethic, effectiveness, transparency in government.

Issues:

Political influence: My college-era mentor who was a graduate student majoring in education research. From him, I learned responsibility of public service and the power of providing equal access to education.

Budget recommendations: I support making cuts to wasteful, non-essential services, closing tax loopholes, and using federal stimulus dollars, if necessary, to getting Arizona back on track to create jobs. Revenues are best increased through an improved economy. I oppose increasing taxes of any kind without a balanced budget and state government reforms first.

Other concerns: The key priorities for Arizona are education, jobs, the economy, immigration and addressing healthcare. I would also concentrate on making Arizona a business-friendly place to live, work and prosper.

Fiscal philosophy: I am conservative fiscally, but believe that a “starve the beast” approach to fiscal management does not work. Making massive cuts to education, public safety jobs, or cutting an agency’s budget and leaving it to agency managers to make cuts will end up mostly in reduced services, not reduced operating costs.

Background & experience: I have four years of recent experience working for the state government. Arizona needs my skills in government, auditing, effectiveness and strategic planning. As a former business owner, I understand what is needed to bring jobs to the state. And, having gone through 12 years of Arizona’s education system, I have an understanding of the challenges growth creates on basic infrastructures.

Prop. 100 sales tax: Instead of a temporary sales tax increase, I would have preferred better fiscal planning in the years prior to the deficit.

Pro-life/pro-choice: I believe the very difficult and emotional issue of abortion should be decided between a woman and her family, physician and clergy. Government should not be part of the decision.

One last thing: I am seeking the House of Representative to get Arizona back on track and apply my unique skills, unshakeable ethics, and creativity to serve Arizona. As a retiree, I am not seeking political office as a stepping stone to higher office or to further my business interests.

Campaign Finance: public.
