About Legislative District 8

This is the least racially diverse district in the state with more than 90 percent of both the general population and the voting age population self-described as white. It has the smallest percentage of Hispanics and Native Americans and the fifth-smallest percentage of blacks. It is also tied with District 18 as the most affluent district in the state. This district has the second-highest percentage of residents with college degrees and the second fewest who did not graduate from high school. Registered Democrats make up less than a quarter of all voters, the smallest percentage of any district in the state.

Republican registration rolls have declined by more than 9 percent since 2002, and the GOP is no longer holds an absolute majority among registered voters. This is also one of the few districts in which the percentage of Democrats has increased during the past eight years. Nevertheless, Republicans still have a 21.5 percentage point advantage over Democrats.
