The voter registration edge enjoyed by the GOP over Democrats in this district has shrunk in the past seven years from 8.6 percent to barely 1 percent today. The percentage of voters not affiliated with the two major parties has grown by nearly 8 percentage points. In most demographic categories, this district stands at or near the middle of the pack: It is 15th in percentage of whites and of Native Americans, 13th in the percentage of Hispanics, 16th in per-capita income, 15th in percentage of population below the poverty line, 13th in number of persons 18 or older with military service.
