About Legislative District 17

Voter registration in this district has gone from a nearly five-point Republican advantage when district lines were drawn in 2002 to a six-point Democrat advantage in the most recent report from the Secretary of State’s Office. For the first two elections in the decade, Republicans captured one of the three legislative seats; however, in 2006 the Democrats made a clean sweep, and in 2008 all incumbents were re-elected easily.

With the ASU Main Campus in the district, the district population is one of the best educated in the state (top-third in percentage with college degrees and bottom-third in percentage without high school diplomas). The percentage of persons between 19 and 44 years of age is also the highest in the state. The district with the next-smallest percentage of population in this age category is LD-20 with 45 percent.
