This East Valley district has the second-highest percentage of whites in the state and has the fourth-smallest number of Hispanics. The district’s median income of $22,384 places it in the middle of the pack among all the state’s districts. Its poverty level, however, has historically been among the state’s lowest. Registration in both major parties has declined since 2002: Republicans by almost eight percentage points; Democrats by one percentage point. The ranks of registered voters not affiliated with either major party have grown by almost 50 percent, overtaking Democrats and accounting for more than 29 percent of all registered voters. The district has the fifth-highest percentage of veterans and the sixth-lowest percentage of residents living in poverty.
