Age: 34 (8/4/75, Panorama City, CA).
Arizona since: 2004.
Occupation: President, Democracy (think tank), since 2005; U.S. Navy reserve officer, since 2003; business consultant, since 1999; AZ assistant attorney general, 2006-09; White House staff, 1997-98.
Marital: Married (Stephanie Cherny).
Children: 1.
Religious preference: Jewish.
Education: B.A., Harvard, 1997; J.D., University of California, 2002. Political experience: I have worked in government and on campaigns for more than 20 years including serving on the White House staff, working for Vice President Al Gore, and advising President Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign. I am a former Democratic district chair in LD14 and an elected precinct committeeperson.
Memberships have included: Current and past member of the Phoenix Commission on Housing and Neighborhoods, Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s Domestic Violence Committee, and the Board of the AZ League of Conservation Voters.
Interests: I love to read about American history and have written two books about the subject, “The Next Deal” and “The Candy Bombers” but spend most of my free time with my wife and 2-year-old son.
Issues:
Political influence: I learned from working with President Bill Clinton how to achieve fiscal responsibility, economic growth and job creation at the same time.
Top priority: To ensure that we make Arizona’s funds safer and more secure by no longer simply risking them on Wall Street stocks, but instead investing more of them in helping to create the jobs of the future here at home in Arizona.
Changes to duties: I do not believe we should be changing the duties and responsibilities of the state Treasurer’s Office, but I will start living up to present duties and responsibilities — such as auditing state government — that have not be fulfilled in recent years.
Background & experience: Fifteen years of working as a prosecutor of financial fraud in the private sector and on economic issues in government have given me a unique set of experiences to discharge the duties of the treasurer in auditing state government, guiding our investments and serving as Arizona’s chief economic officer.
Campaign finance: private.
