Gov. Jan Brewer and other Republican candidates are moving to make controversy surrounding Arizona's illegal immigration law an election issue by putting a spotlight on Democratic rivals' backing by unions that support an economic boycott of the state.

In almost staccato fashion, Senate and House committees on Aug. 9 approved new legislation aimed at guaranteeing people's right to a secret ballot in union elections. Gov. Jan Brewer called the ninth special session this term to fix the anti-union ballot measure, which the courts earlier ruled unconstitutional.

The election season was heating up just as the sun was setting on May 26. Political challengers and incumbents hoping to lead Arizona next year rushed to submit their signatures to the Secretary of State to qualify for the ballot.
