Republican David Schweikert is locked in a heated battle for Arizona’s 5th Congressional District with incumbent Democrat Harry Mitchell. Recent campaign commercials have accused Schweikert of mismanagement as Maricopa County treasurer and labeled him a “vulture” investor.

Four of Arizona's eight congressional seats are likely to be competitive in November's general election, three held by Democrats and one in a Republican-leaning district being vacated by a Republican who is retiring.

Sen. John McCain has squared off in a sometimes testy debate with a former Arizona congressman hoping to take his job. J.D. Hayworth portrayed McCain Saturday night as a flip-flopper on illegal immigration, while McCain painted his rival as a faux conservative who is lax with tax dollars.

Steve Moak said former Vice President Dan Quayle tried to talk him out of the race for Arizona’s 3rd Congressional District – in which Quayle’s son, Ben, is a candidate – and encouraged him to run for a lower public office.

Six months of trying to outflank Sen. John McCain from the right produced less support, less money, fewer endorsements and lower poll numbers than J.D. Hayworth and his dedicated followers had anticipated.
