A recount has confirmed that Arizona’s Proposition 112 failed by the slimmest margin in state history.

General election results made official Monday set up the first recount of a statewide ballot proposition that officials can recall.

Maricopa County will count outstanding provisional ballots through the weekend if necessary despite a state law that generally says all vote tallying must be completed by Friday, officials said.

A civil rights group asked an appeals court to require Arizona counties to process provisional ballots from voters with unconfirmed citizenship status.

Republican Ken Bennett will continue as Arizona's secretary of state. Bennett, who was appointed to the position when Jan Brewer was elevated to governor last year, defeated Democrat Chris Deschene in the Nov. 2 election.

Nationally, Democrats suffered disaster in the general election. In Arizona, it was even worse. For the first time since 1994, Republicans swept Arizona’s statewide offices. Even the Attorney General’s Office, which has been in Democratic hands for the past 12 years, couldn’t withstand the Republican tsunami.

Voter turnout across the state Tuesday is expected to be on the high side. Arizona Secretary of State spokesman Matt Benson says turnout is predicted to be 60 to 65 percent.

Turnout is expected to be between 20-25 percent of registered voters, the range seen in Arizona's recent primary elections.
