Arizona House Republicans elect slate of leaders

Rep. Debbie Lesko was elected House majority whip, beating Rep. David Stevens in the House Republicans' only contested leadership race. House Speaker Kirk Adams was uncontested in his bid for a second term in charge of the House. Rep. Andy Tobin, who served as majority whip last session, was unconsted in the race for majority leader.

Democrat Harry Mitchell is in his second general election battle against Republican challenger David Schweikert. Campaign advertising has accused Mitchell of voting to cut billions of dollars from Medicare and labeled him “too liberal” for the district.

Dick and Peg Powell, retired teachers from Tucson, came to see U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords debate the issues with Republican challenger Jesse Kelly. What they saw, instead, was a debate sprinkled with a lot of sniping from the two candidates, and even more booing and heckling from the audience.

Polls show Goddard gaining ground in governor's race

For a candidate who has trailed by as much as 22 points in recent polls, even a sliver of good news is cause for celebration. Every poll taken over the past few months has shown Republican Gov. Jan Brewer beating Democrat Terry Goddard by double digits, with some showing him down by as much as 22 points. But though they all show different margins of victory for Brewer, a couple polls have shown Goddard narrowing the gap as Election Day approaches.
