Judge upholds major portions of Alabama’s SB1070-style law (access required)

A federal judge in Alabama upheld two major provisions of that state’s illegal immigration law that are nearly identical to key portions of SB1070 that were struck down. U.S. District Court Judge Sharon Blackburn blocked some portions of HB56 in her ruling on Wednesday but upheld provisions making it a crime to not carry immigration papers and requiring law enforcement officers to check people’s immigration status if they have a reasonable suspicion that they’re in the country illegally.

Proposed order bans matching funds

Nearing the 5:00 end-of-the-business-day deadline, Circuit Court Judge Roslyn Silver issued a proposed order banning matching funds. But it isn't the final word on whether the funds will be passed out to Clean Elections candidates in 2010.

Connecticut ruling looms over AZ Clean Elections (access required)

Opponents of Arizona's system of publicly funded campaigns were further encouraged by a federal judge's Aug. 27 decision to eliminate Connecticut's campaign finance reform method in entirety. The ruling by District of Connecticut Judge Stefan Underhill blasted the state's Citizens' Election Program, a voluntary program enacted in 2005 to provide legislative and statewide candidates with public campaign funding.
