Lawmakers react to injunction on abortion laws (access required)

A Maricopa County Superior Court judge has granted a preliminary injunction against new state laws that place restrictions on abortion. Although the decision has been embraced by state Democrats, the Republican co-sponsor of both bills said it's another case of courts infringing on the territory of the Legislature.

GOP behind Quelland

Several sources from the District 10 Republicans said talks of looking for replacements for Rep. Doug Quelland have died off. The mustachioed lawmaker was absent from the party's Monday night (Sept. 21) meeting, but he did have a LD10 Republican relay the message that the lawmaker "had hit a home run" during his testimony that occurred earlier in the day, said one source.

Gray, Barto file motion to intervene in federal abortion suit (access required)

Two lawmakers, along with several conservative groups, filed a motion Sept. 22 to intervene as defendants in a federal lawsuit that was filed to challenge a new state law to restrict abortions. Sen. Linda Gray, a Republican from Glendale and Rep. Nancy Barto, a Republican from Phoenix, argued that they have a right to intervene because the lawsuit could invalidate their votes.

New law expands religious expression in schools (access required)

Sen. Linda Gray often cites "The New England Primer" while delivering speeches on the Senate floor. In a committee hearing June 10, the Glendale Republican read an excerpt: "I believe in God the Father, Almighty Maker of heaven and Earth, and in Jesus his only Son our Lord, which was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried." Gray was trying to make a point.
