Geographic Description of Legislative District 1

District 1 lies in north-central Arizona and encompasses the northeast half of Yavapai County and much of Coconino County south of the Grand Canyon that is not part of the Navajo Nation. It extends from the high desert scrub of the Coconino Plateau in the northwest to the dense conifer forests of the Mogollon Mesa in the southeast and from Sedona to the San Francisco Peaks, which contain one of the state’s two prominent ski areas and the highest point in the state (Humphrey’s Peak at 12,643 feet) just north of Flagstaff. The district includes large parts of the Kaibab and Coconino national forests, but excludes Flagstaff (which is in LD-2). Principal cities and towns in the district include Prescott (approximate population: 43,000), Prescott Valley (38,300), Camp Verde (11,500), Cottonwood (11,100), Sedona (11,000) and Williams (3,000).

Interstate 40, the transportation spine of northern Arizona, slices through the district east-to-west. Interstate 17, which terminates in Flagstaff, connects the district with Phoenix and the south. US Highway 69, the primary route to Prescott and Prescott Valley, is being widened from its junction with I-17 at Cordes Junction to Prescott. US Highway 64 north from Williams provides gateway access to the Grand Canyon, which is visited by as many as
5 million tourists annually.
