Age: 37 (3/05/73, Phoenix, AZ).
Arizona since: Birth.
Occupation: Private consultant.
Education: B.A., environmental science, NAU, 1996.
Political experience: Helped with numerous campaigns, both ballots and candidate; served as district chair and state committee person for Democratic Party; AZ House since 2007; Democratic whip since 2009.
Memberships have included: Sierra Club; board member, Phoenix Scores; the League of Conservation Voters; Center for Progressive Leadership.
Interests: Mountain biking, climbing, fishing, hiking.
Issues:
Political influence: Numerous people — my parents, other elected officials, and American heroes in all the different communities of our society.
Budget recommendations: Comprehensive tax reform.
Other concerns: Renewable energy, economic development and jobs.
Fiscal philosophy: We need common sense and pragmatism, not ideology. I have demonstrated this through my actions as a legislator time and time again.
Background & experience: As a native Arizonan, I have been involved in my community for years. I have worked in the private, non-profit, and public sectors, so I have a great understanding of all of these crucial elements in Arizona’s economy. Arizona is my home, and I am committed to making it the greatest state in our nation.
Proposition 100 sales tax: I opposed it on the floor, because there were better solutions to our problem. The Democratic Caucus offered these solutions time and time again, and they were routinely ignored by Gov. Brewer and legislative Republicans. So, unfortunately, it was the only option the voters had, and they made the right choice by passing it because we needed the revenue. That being said, it does not solve our problem. As I’ve been saying for two years, the only solution to our problem is comprehensive tax reform.
Pro-life/pro-choice: I oppose government intervention in personal decisions that should be made between a doctor, a patient, a family and any spiritual counsel the person may seek.
One last thing: I am a common sense, pragmatic Democrat who is solution-driven. The state can no longer afford to be led by people who are more interested in political games and partisan rhetoric. We need leadership with vision and dedication to the citizens of Arizona, and I intend to continue governing with the same principles I have always governed: common sense, hard work, and putting Arizona first.
Campaign Finance: private.
