Issues
Political influence: Though many people have had an influence on me politically, my father, Enrique, was the earliest influence.
Top priority: My top priority would be to stabilize and enhance the economy and lower the deficit.
Respected opponent: John Rhodes. He was an intelligent man who could work in a bipartisan manner.
Wall Street bailout: I voted no on the original Bush proposal, which was followed by the subsequent collapse of the financial markets. After some legislative changes to the Bush proposal, and encouraged in a bipartisan manner by the 4th Congressional District constituents and colleagues, I voted yes for the reworked legislation.
Stimulus Act: Because of the high unemployment rate, the lack of consumer confidence, the freezing of the credit markets, and the overall failing economy, I voted for the ARRA bill to create and save jobs, invest in the physical and intellectual infrastructure of our nation, and to provide tax incentives and tax breaks for small and medium-size businesses.
Health care overhaul: I voted for the health care package because I believe in universal health care, and while this bill does not establish a universal health care system, it does mean that nearly all individuals residing in the 4th Congressional District will now be eligible for health care insurance coverage.
